HAND and EYE

Since prehistoric times the handprint has been a sign of human presence, found at sites such as Peche-Merle cave in France, and Aboriginal rock shelters in Australia. Artists of the old civilizations around the Mediterranean elevated both hand and eye to iconic status. The Hand of Fatima and the Eye of Horus both represent protection.

Hand and eye are coordinated in the creative process. The image of a hand with an eye in the palm is the sign of an artisan.

We hope you will join us to see what our artists' hands and eyes
bring to the gallery in February.
